Goyard: Must-Have or Status Symbol?

This leads me to wonder: Goyard- must have or status symbol?
Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to own one. What I question: is it
worth the money? Are people buying it for the second glance and extra
attention, or is it actually so stylish that its worth a mortgage
payment?
Founded in 1853, it is the oldest Malletier (trunkmaker) in history.
In the past, Goyard was a travel necessity for many aristocratic
families. Their royal orders have always been an important part of
Goyard's reputation. The brand is so exclusive that is only available
in four American locations (Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, and the Goyard
store in San Francisco's Union Square.)
Obviously you can't argue the success of the world-renowed brand. I
just second guess my desire for it because it really and truly is the
ultimate luxury item.
So when it boils down to it... do we really love it or do we lust over
the label? Well, I guess the only way to do extensive research is for
me to own one and test it out. I am happy to accept all donations.
Until that day comes- I will keep my eyes on the prize.

The Laptop Bag

I will be getting a laptop soon and you know what I am most excited about? If you guessed the laptop itself, you are wrong! Nope, a computer, no matter how many bells and whistles it has does nothing to excite me; to me a laptop is a laptop. No, the thing that makes my heart go pitter-patter is the chance to go shopping for a laptop bag.

Seriously, this really is more important then the computer itself. I refuse to carry my laptop around in some canvas tote emblazoned with my company's logo! Besides, you can’t use just any old bag to hold your laptop. It has to be sturdy, easy to carry/hold and, most importantly, look good with any outfit.

So off I went to find the perfect laptop bag. Now, you could settle for the laptop bags available at the office supply store or the computer shop, but why not let your fingers do the work? Online shopping is the perfect way to get access to an amazing assortment of laptop bags, more than you will ever find in the store. I expected to find a good assortment online, but even I was surprised at the variety.

The problem soon becomes how to choose the perfect bag from so many wonderful options. Finally, companies have realized that people take their laptops everywhere; and they want them to not only be safe and secure, but stylish, too. In fact, I am considering getting a more toned down, “work-a-day” bag for the office and a cute, colorful little bag for taking the laptop to the coffee shop on weekends.

My first stop was the website http://www.kolobags.com/. This site carries an enormous assortment of laptop bags in a variety of prices. If you can imagine it, they have it. From a simple sleeve that just protects your laptop to wheeled laptop bags. I imagine these wheeled bags come in handy for those that travel extensively with their laptops and a ton of paper work.

Of course, you can always find stylish laptop bags from the designers. Gucci has an adorable laptop case. Also, later this fall White + Warren will be releasing a beautiful leather laptop bag. So happy shopping!

Clutch Me

Sometimes you just want something small and tasteful. Especially for a night on the town, nothing will spoil your look more then carrying a giant purse.

No woman should step out of her house for a hot night out carrying her everyday bag. Don’t get me wrong, your everyday bag is your go-to bag for work and casual weekends (even going out directly after work) but it simply will not do for an evening at the theatre, gallery opening or even dinner with that special someone. No matter how sexy the dress a 10lb purse dangling off your arm will ruin your look.

Time to get a "night out" bag. If you spend all that time and money getting beautiful for your night out you need a bag that is beautiful, sleek and, most importantly, small. Your dress-up bag should be complementary to your outfit; your purse is a great way to bring a little color into your safe LBD; it also should be sleek and sexy. What it shouldn’t be is the huge, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink bag you take to work.

The ideal look would be no purse at all, but we all know that is impossible. So the next best thing is the clutch! Yes, this is the clutch’s time to shine. It is small and discreet, but able to carry everything a girl out on the town will need. Of course, the clutch would never do for anything more then a night on the town, it can never carry all your day-to-day essentials. But for a fabulous night out it is all about the clutch.

Yes, a good clutch complements an outfit, then stays out of the way. You can get a clutch with a secure little wrist strap if you are worried about it getting misplaced or if you are really daring you can get a clutch with no strap at all. Either way these little guys are powerhouses. What else do you know that can add a little bling and carry your lipstick too?

Marc Jacobs Frog Clutch

In Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, basic human needs must be fulfilled in order to function. For me, one of my principle needs is shopping. Call it superficial, but it helps me get through the day. So get your daily dose of shopping and think outside the box.

I have accepted the fact that I have an unhealthy obsession with clutches. Thankfully most are so overpriced that I can only drool over them. Here is an exception to the rule, and it is mighty fun to boot. Check out this Marc Jacobs Frog Clutch; amphibians everywhere will be complimenting you.

I still believe you need basic clutches to complete your wardrobe, but sometimes you need a little twist.

One Woman's Trash is Another Woman's Bag

The winners of the Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA) were
recently announced. I love this competition. It recognizes up and
coming designers who stand out in a crowded market. Plus it is a great
way to find new and inspired designs. "It" bags are nice but they all
start to look alike after awhile. The IHDA contests showcases
cutting-edge design and fresh ideas.

Helen Marchoschamer for Ecoist won the Best Green Handbag category.
Ecoist is a fascinating company committed to sustainability. Ecoist
recycles candy wrappers, soda labels, subway maps and newspapers,
diverts them from landfills, and uses them to create stylish,
eco-friendly bags.

The bag that wowed the IHDA judges was Slim Portfolio in Shades of
Brown. Slim Portfolio is an oversized clutch made from repurposed candy
wrappers. It is made in Mexico by fair trade workers.

The company has an extensive collection. My favorites are the silver
metallic bags made from foil gum wrappers. As they say, "One woman's
trash is another woman's treasure." And then there is my new motto,
"Doing good by looking good!"

You In A Bag

I just spent the last three days at the Atlanta Apparel Mart’s June Apparel & Accessories Show. Bags galore! With trends coming and going, hot looks that become mass produced and then fade away, what style is really you? Can we trust trends to tell us what’s good enough to carry on our shoulder? And even so, what does that translate to once everyone else has the same bag!?

You’ve seen it, maybe even bought one, maybe even still carry it. The bags with the certain print - leopard, giraffe, etc. - or the fabric print brand with millions of followers are bags that take off almost overnight and wake up to instant stardom. Was the trend really you? Did you buy in because your best friend, neighbor, mom, and aunt did? Or was it something you genuinely favored and regretted that everyone owned a copy?

Let’s get something straight. Bag=Expression. Certainly the expression is somewhat lessened when everyone is expressing the same thing. Maybe even the expression is to express the same thing? A sense of belonging or in-the-know? Ok, really deep there when all I really want to accomplish is a simple bag experiment.

Here’s the shake down. I want you to come up with a bag that describes you, in its style, form, function, etc. Basically, show us you in a bag. If a bag could sum you up, your style, let’s see it! I want to know what funky, hip, classy, edgy, indie, rocker, preppy Modo Facile Bag Lady fans we have out there!

I miss recess. A lot.

Why is it that this normal daily routine is abruptly ripped away from us? Are we suddenly deemed too old for child’s play?

Thankfully, handbag designer Kathrine Baumann misses recess too – or at least she’s never lost her sense of wonder, whimsy and wackiness. work of art". To me, clothing is my portable art. Not following
mainstream trends, being unique, and working on your intuition is what

Tote-al Do's and Dont's

The other day I saw a woman with a tote made with quilted fabric-college sports team fabric. Now this would have looked very cute-sporty even had she been at a game. I mean I personally don’t get the need to support a team by emblazoning myself with their logo, but I understand that some people do! Anyway, the problem I had is that she was dressed in a very nice outfit, obviously headed to the office, using this fabric sports team tote to ferry her items to work. It just ruined her look.

I see it everyday - ladies taking their lunch, extra shoes etc. to work in ugly totes, sometimes even plastic grocery bags (shudder). Yes, I understand Wisconsin is not the fashion capital of the world, but that doesn’t mean we have to lose all respect!

Come on ladies, pinky swear with me-”I will use a nice looking tote to take my stuff to work.” You are all dressed for work, wearing good clothes, good shoes, and carrying a nice handbag. You spoil the whole thing by having an ugly tote or worse yet, a ratty, plastic bag hanging off your arm. It isn’t just sports team logos that ruin the look, it is bags with overly cutesy themes: puppies, canvas bags that are dirty, and the worst tote bags that have photos (usually of the family) on them.

Admit it, we spend a lot of time making sure that our outfits and jewelry project the right professional image, so how come we tend to forget that our tote is part of that image? Let’s start taking that extra step and put effort into choosing a nice looking tote bag.

So from now on the rule is-A patchwork bag that proclaims our love of a certain sports team is fine for the weekend trip to the stadium. Not for bringing our planner et al to the office!! Agreed?

There are many fantastic totes out there in all shapes, sizes and colors (and yes-prices). I myself, prefer a sleek, single color tote. I usually play it safe with black. But feel free to mix it up with a little color! Just remember NO sports teams, NO cute kitty faces and NO pictures of your children emblazoned on the side of the bag.

Luxe Leather

I have always been a fan of luxurious leather products. Shoes, bags, belts, couches; you name it and I’m sold!

I love this “Nubuck” light leather bag from 7 For All Mankind. It’s trendy, stylish, and made of soft leather to add a little luxury to your day.

Durability -they can stand the wear and tear of a long day from commute to work to commute to a night on the town-and that calls for a celebration in itself!

Timmy Woods

Please don’t hate me. I have a confession to make. I didn’t like “Sex and the City: The Movie." Maybe my expectations were too high -- I was hoping for another “The Devil Wears Prada.” Maybe it was because the plot was thin and the characters were flat. Or maybe it was that the wardrobes were colorful but somehow missed the mark.

I did have one pleasant take-away from the film, however. I bookmarked the Timmy Woods website (http://www.timmywoods.com/) after seeing the film. Yes, I know Ms. Bradshaw carried the Timmy Woods horse bag on the television show. But there were so many fun trinkets during the series, who could keep up? However, when the designer’s Eiffel Tower bag was featured so prominently in the movie’s publicity photos, it made me want to see more of her work.

Timmy Woods launched her Beverly Hills-based business in 1992. Since then she has developed a following of celebrities and collectors who admire her whimsical creations. Her bags are carved from acacia wood, a durable hard wood found in Central America and Australia. Acacia has a fine grain and a high polish and is frequently used in furniture design.

Personally, I like the bags in the Sizzler collection the best. Some of the top sellers include the champagne bottle, the nail polish, the amaryllis and the Love Boat. Timmy Woods bags mix quality workmanship, with a sense of humor and confident style. That’s what fashion should be all about.

The Fashion Nation Proclamation

Four stores and seven decades ago our fathers (Coco, Yves, Salvatore, and Bottega) brought forth on this continent, a new fashionation, conceived in style, and dedicated to the proposition that not all bags are created equal. The stars and bars are valued symbols of America. Betsy Ross would be filled with joy to see how ever-popular her design is today.

Everyone loves the important history behind the flag, but should we deface our country by wearing bad 4th of July fashion? Should this be considered fashion heresy?

Independence Day is right around the corner, and I beg of you not to wear a flag purse. Unless I am proven wrong, a majority of flag fashions are heinous. So put your Miss America thong string bikini into yesterday's trash and show your patriotism in a more understated manner.

Match this purse with that awesome solid white dress that isn't completely sweat stained yet. (OR! match the white purse from my last entry -see Follow The White Light- with a solid blue or red dress...use your imagination, the possibilities are almost endless!)

You hold certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of fashion. I hold these truths to be self-evident and you should too.

Follow the White Light

Forget evolution, this is the debate: Do I dish out the dough on a white purse that I can only wear for three months? Or if I'm spending that kind of money- should I just get another seasonless black purse?

The answer is: Follow the white light.

I understand the resentment of getting a great bag that you can only wear three months out of the year. But I guarantee that you will wear it to death and by the time fall starts creeping into your peripheral vision, you will be ready to move on.

I recommend getting a classic shape and keeping it as simple as possible. Choose a style that is both traditional and subtle. This way the likelihood of you hating it three years later is slim. I also recommend doing a little research. This kind of purchase can haunt you if not done correctly.

TAKE A FRIEND FOR A SECOND OPINION!!! They will save you from the black plague of fashionistas: buyer's remorse. If you are looking for a deal....buy your white handbag during end-of-summer sales... if you have the patience to wait that long!

Like the seasons change, so does your wardrobe. Spend the money and you will be happy when you get to bring it back to life next year.

The debate is over. The fat lady is singing all about it.

Just String Along

I’m seriously trying to be as eco-conscious as possible, but sometimes it’s hard. It takes a lot of remembering…this is the hard part.

Which plastics are a recycle do or don’t? Is it better to use paper or plastic. Did I remember my water bottle so I can refill it instead of buying new?

Well, one way to jump on the band wagon is to carry one of these cute little string bags around in your purse. They take up absolutely no room and actually hold more than you think-refrain from over stuffing! They come in a variety of colors and handle lengths so there's something for everyone.

On The Fringe

Come close, I want to share a little secret with you. I love fringe. Yes, you heard right, fringe.

Now before you think I am totally tacky, let me clarify. I like a little tasteful fringe. Something that gives an ordinary item a little swing, a little toughness. Not a huge overdose of fringe ala an ‘80’s rock star. At the point when people started to wear fringed PANTS, I lost respect for fringe. I mean fringe on PANTS?! Come on -that is going overboard. A little fringe on your purse-now that’s what I am talking about.

I know, I know it is a little crazy, but I can’t explain it. It somehow speaks to my inner cow girl without going all country and western. I blame it on MTV. Probably caught the fringe bug from overexposure to all those fringe clad rock stars at an impressionable age.

So while I was sad when fringe went away, I understood that it had to go; it was on EVERYTHING and so overdone (see above reference to fringed pants). Yet, I did mourn it’s demise.

Now, I am totally pumped to see that TrueReligion Brand Jeans has added fringed purses to their line up. Now I am partial to the purses in the beautiful whiskey colored leather, but they have a whole range of colors to please everyone. There is a beautiful red purse with fringe that just might get me to leave my brown leather behind.

These purses are sexy. I mean, come on, there is something about walking along with that little whisper of fringe swinging along to complement your stride. It is just totally cool.

These purses are more a casual purse; I don’t think I would take my fringe purse to work. It might give management the wrong idea-I mean fringe does kind of say “party girl”. Still, on weekends and nights out I am all about the fringe.

Of course, for me the fringe has to be on a leather purse, with real leather fringe, no imitations for me. I can’t imagine how anyone would think a man made material would be suited for fringe.

Urban Jungle

I’ve always dreamed of taking a weeklong trip to Africa to go on safari and see up close the magnificence of the wild animals, serene waters and warm golden sun. But let’s face it- I’m a city girl and New York is enough of a jungle for me everyday!

After hitting some of the fashion shows during New York Fashion Week, showcasing the latest and greatest for Spring/Summer 2008, there was one recurring theme: ethnic. Some of the top designers from Oscar de la Renta to Versace are all doing tribal patterns and ethnic prints so authentic-looking, you would think they were…well…authentic and straight from the Congo.

One designer known for embracing an ethnic print season to season is Marni. Whether it is in the clothing or accessories, they always do it right! I’ve found the perfect bag that I’ll be toting along with me everywhere this summer. It’s large enough to hold all of my magazines, iPods, Blackberry, makeup and all else that fills my handbag on a daily basis. Yet it’s slouchy enough to conceal it all with leather shoulder straps sturdy enough to support it all.

The bag has a finish resembling a beautiful abstract painting with large wild brushstrokes. And its colors are cool earth tones of grassy greens and sunny yellows reminiscent of the wilds of Africa. Thank You Isaac!

Let us give thanks to Isaac and the gods of Target. Mr. Mizrahi and the Powers-that-Be at Tar-jay started the movement we now refer to as “fashion for the masses.” The first Isaac Mizrahi for Target collection brought affordable luxury to every woman regardless of her bank balance.

Isaac was the pioneer who led a caravan of designers over the chasm and into the mainstream. Dominique Cohen, Loeffler Randall, Devil Kroell and Joy Gryson all followed behind the daring trendsetter, and fashion was never the same.

Payless joined the game with its shoes and bags from Lela Rose and Kohls now carries Simply Vera from Vera Wang. But Target has always done it best.

The retail giant’s latest offering is no exception. For its next limited-edition accessories collaboration, Target is partnering with renowned designer Monica Botkier. Stylish and affordable, the Botkier for Target handbags line will be the seventh collection in a series of limited-time-only accessories from Target. The line will be available at select stores and online from July 20 through September 14. Prices range from $19.99 to $49.99.

The collection includes clutches, wristlets, satchels and hobos in basic black, bold fuchsia and luxe metallics. The best part is that Botkier has incorporated the Target bullseye logo into the line as a signature hardware piece, and it doubles as a removable key chain.

Happy Valentino!

In my fantasy universe I wake up every morning to a gorgeous view ofthe ocean, I have no morning breath and a hot cup of coffee is patiently waiting next to my bed. My hair always looks spectacular, ice cream is an essential food group, and money grows on trees. I never sleep less than 10 hours, every movie is like seeing Forrest Gump for the first time, and all of my meals are catered by Wolfgang Puck.

Last but not least, in my utopian world I happen to own this stunning satin Valentino bow clutch...hey, it could happen.

A girl can dream, but I must get off cloud 9 and snap back to reality. Since I have the tiniest bit of will power and bills to pay, I can only yearn for this gorgeous purse. I’m a commitment-phobe. There, I said it. It’s not a relationship thing; my problem is that I just can’t commit to large purchases.

An Oath Of Function

Have you ever been planning on buying a certain bag, this one bag that made any extra money burn a hole in your pocket? I have. And I have wound up very disappointed when I came to purchase it in finding that it had no inside pockets-NONE!

Admiration turned into sheer disbelief, then disappointment, then….i think I went through the five steps of grief! (or is it eight?) I knew it was the bag for me, but it just must not have been meant to be.

This was a bag that would gobble up your possessions into its endless pit of disorganization and disarray with no thought for your peace of mind. Phone ringing? Better have voice mail-because there’s no way you have time to find it while its still ringing! Hang nail? Good luck finding that precious tool-it’s floating around in there somewhere.

Now I’m not admitting to carrying around a bunch of junk in my bag; you may be thinking, “she just has too much stuff.” Nope! We all know that it adds up after a day or two and the essentials multiply before your very eyes! So I think this post applies to everyone (except little Miss Minimalist whose prioritizing skills I envy, carrying the single tic-tac and compact mirror with one tube of gloss).

You know its true ladies-we can take one for the team with the pain of a pinched toe if the amazing pink stiletto was just a half size too small, that’s worth it. But some things are worth waiting for-like a bag with at least one hidden zipper pouch inside, maybe the cell phone holder pouch, etc. Go ahead and join me in the proclamation that you won’t succumb to such panic-finding car keys is just as frustrating!

I am such an advocate of inside pockets because I know whats it's like to be without something you need-fast-and I want to save you the heartache of “the perfect bag” that let you down. This way, you are prepared to just walk away. Even when it calls your name, don’t look back! Just walk away and say…

Sunshine & warm weather - that can only mean one thing. It's time to get a new summer purse!

Alright, I can’t be the only woman who wants to switch their handbag once the nice weather hits; to change from something that is heavy and functional to something light, fun and fashionable (naturally).

Size Matters

The greatest accessory a fashionista can carry on her arm, besides a well-dressed hottie, is a stylish handbag. I’m talking about the kind of bag that draws both admiring gazes and jealous glances from other style-savvy women.

But like mouth-watering arm-candy of the male persuasion, an important motto also applies to your choice in handbags – Size Matters!

From baguettes to bucket bags, purses come in all shapes and sizes. The right handbag can flatter your shape as much as those fave jeans (you know, the ones that kiss your curves in all the right places)…but the wrong bag can be as deadly as a pair of Mom Jeans in all their elastic-waistband glory.

Not to worry, my fellow Bag Ladies - just follow a few simple rules and you’ll be in Handbag Heaven:

Your bag should compliment your body type. For you tall and thin ladies, don’t be afraid to rock a bigger bag. Hobo bags, satchels and other large, unstructured styles are a perfect fit. Your stature allows you to pull this off, without looking like the bag is pulling you down. If you are a little more voluptuous, opt for handbags that are smaller and more structured, like a rectangular clutch or cigar box bag. Just like clothes, a bag can give the illusion of adding weight, or slimming you down.

The long and short of choosing the right bag is just that – long vs. short. To all petite women: do not carry bags that fall too far down on your body, such as the Balantine style that hits at the knee. They just draw the eye down and make you look shorter! Clutches and smaller bags are a vertically challenged girl’s best friend! You can also opt for a handheld bag that is not overwhelming (I’m a huge fan of Louis Vuitton’s Damier Azur Speedy 30) or an over-the-shoulder mid-sized bag that falls above your waist.

The law of visual illusion states: wherever the bottom of a handbag hits your body is the body part that will be maximized! If you always wanted a bigger bust, start sporting a bag with a short strap – or one that you can tuck under your arm. If you’re trying to lose a few inches in the hip area, avoid a bag that falls at the hips. The best bet for a flattering bag length is one that falls in the middle of your torso.

This goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway – choose a size and shape that look good on you, not because it’s the latest, trendiest or most popular. You’ll know what bags look good on you when you try it on, in front of a store mirror, BEFORE you buy!

Balloons, Cake, and a Fendi for Everyone

My son and my birthday’s are just one week apart and the big days are approaching. He will be six and I will be… much older. Would it be tacky for me to ask for a joint present? Because I thought we both might enjoy the Fendi Artist baguette.

Lest you think I’m selfish, let me explain. My son is an aspiring artist and at the risk of sounding like on of those mothers, he is quite gifted. He even had two pieces of his work commissioned for the school art show last month: a multimedia piece (construction paper, glue and images cut from a magazine) and a crayon on paper sketch.

The Fendi Artist is a plain white canvas baguette. But it comes with ten permanent Pantone markers so buyers can create personalized designs. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if I had a one-of-a-kind baguette covered in Magic Marker dinosaurs? And how fun for my son to be able to draw Mommy a picture that won’t just get stuck to the refrigerator door. I’m sure he’ll love it.

Now that I have the gifts covered, I can start planning our joint party. I was thinking of serving a fromage blanc tart and a meyer lemon confit. I’m sure he’ll love it.

Disposable Fashion

The thing I love about summer is what I call “disposable fashion”. You can just get away with wearing clothes and accessories that aren’t super expensive. Somehow, a sundress from Forever 21 that cost $25.00, tops, looks chic. Maybe it’s the tan that helps (heck, a little color goes a long way). Now try that in the fall/winter when, unfortunately, good tailoring and quality fabrics are key. It’s going to be hard to get away with a $25.00 dress.

Keeping all of this in mind I was on a hunt to find a super cute, “disposable” summer bag. Something that I could schlep to and from work and then have it work over-time by using it at the beach. Beach bags are usually so icky with their little nautical motifs or candy colors. I was on a hunt to find simplicity, functionality and styling all rolled into one.

Well, I hit the jackpot when I wandered in to American Apparel. They had a few adorable choices, but the one that really caught my eye was the cotton canvas pocket tote. Are you ready for the best part? $34.00!!! Now tell me how you can beat that?

The bag is 100% cotton with a contrasting color strap. It also has an inside pocket for keys, cell phone etc. I think it’s perfect. This bag is snappy enough for the city then takes you right to the beach. You won’t have a heart attack if your sunscreen leaks in it or if you spill a drink on it. Spot clean it and at the end of the season when you’ve worked it to the max, just toss it. If you want to be super eco friendly you can even use it next season to haul groceries or dry cleaning to and fro. What’s not to love?

It's In The Bag

You’ve heard the expression “it’s in the bag” before, I'm sure. And you fashion divas have probably wondered, well, what kind of bag? There’s so many! Well, not to refer to closing a deal, or landing a big account, but the saying says so much about fashion’s timeless must-have.

Accessory? Hardly. Sometimes the bag IS the outfit. What would heels and a mini be without a coordinating handbag? A total fashion tragedy. An outfit that missed the boat….ok you get it. The bag is everything! Now don’t get me wrong, the perfect shoe is essential too, but when you reach to pay for your caramel macchiato at Starbucks and grab your wallet out of a black leather purse with silver chain handles that you saved two paychecks for, you know all is right with the world.

Habit? I don’t think so. Have you ever had to go without a great bag for a certain amount of time? Say, traveling overseas and you don’t want to bring your best Chanel bag with you? If I had never seen a purse/bag/handbag before and suddenly beheld one in a store window-I would screech in utter delight at having found a fashion soul mate: a statement with utility, style, purpose, and function all neatly compacted into a shoulder bag, sling, wristlet, or handbag.

Definition of the divine bag is only surface-level in its power over us girls. Let’s admit how we treat this beloved possession. I bet you have a certain place in your closet just for your bags…a top shelf, bins along the bottom, each hung neatly on the wall, etc. Just like pots and pans have a place in the kitchen and are essential to cooking a meal-our bags are required to be cared for and in their place when called upon to complete an outfit, right? (Elementary comparisons such as this are always great to make to boyfriends, husbands, and anyone else who just can’t understand why you have so many! Bring up how many DVDs they have!) Each outfit calls for a certain corresponding element that is only fulfilled in the handbag.

And not that matchy-matchy is necessary, in fact just the opposite, but one part - the clothes, jewelry, shoes - all need to be set off by the bag. The bag is quite often the element that makes the ensemble “pop” and really work!

Okay, now you know where my heart truly lies; at the Macy’s sale rack getting three bags for the price of one! I need as many as I can get and they each become part of an experience or memory-I wore this bag on our first date, took that one to the beach with family, let Shirley borrow that one for the company ball, and the list goes on. So if a guy is reading over your shoulder they’d just never understand, and may even be a bit taken aback by our devotion to the bag. But there’s a reason why we start carrying tiny pink plastic purses as little girls, that only hold a Polly Pocket and a pretend lipstick-we know what looks good and we know the way to look good is having a bag you love, HAVE to have, and are proud to own!

Birkin's No Longer The 'It' Bag

Back in junior high when all the cool, rich girls were carrying “A” bags from Etienne Aigner, I carried a Bermuda bag. With their wooden handles and detachable canvas covers, these bags were the epitome of preppy. And preppy, with all of the whales and strawberries and alligators, was the epitome of nerdy. That’s me: a nerd with classic taste.

So even though I’ve just discovered that the Birkin is so last year, I still want one. Apparently understated elegance, classic design and long-lasting quality have become downright retro. It makes sense. We live in a fast-paced, celebrity-crazed, striving culture and we want bigger, better, blingier.

The newest “It” bag will be on display in the U.K. during London Jewelry Week from June 11-15. Retailing for a mere $1.63 million, it is crafted from pure platinum and encrusted with more than 2,000 diamonds. That’s approximately 208 carats. Move over Hermes. There’s a new bag in town!

The bag was created by a Japanese designer, Ginza Tanaka, the same company that brought us other basics like the 24 karat bathing suit and a diamond encrusted Hello Kitty that stands just over one inch tall.

The Tanaka bag is much too flashy for me. That means I won’t waste time lying awake at night wondering how I can afford it. Instead I’ll use that time to dream about my future Birkin. And in the meantime, I will still carry my Bermuda bag – but only in the summer and only on Cape Cod.

Being a nerd has its benefits.

The Card Case: Every Woman's Essential

One of the most handy and useful purchases I have ever made was over a year ago at a certain Fred Segal (Ice Accessories) in Hollywood, California. It might have been one of the cheapest things there: $16 (thats like free at ICE!)

I recommend my beloved card case by Tepper Jackson (from the creator of the fun Target brand Nick and Nora), a line which combines art and utility to make funky travel accessories. The card case comes in several designs and is perfect for traveling through the airport or just carrying along your essentials for a night out. I use it everyday, several times a day, and it doesn't even look worn. It is so convenient and chic. Minimize your space, not your taste.

A Bag Lady's Ten Commandments

Handbags have somehow evolved into a symbol of a woman's social status. The problem with this is that label-obsessive people can lose sight of good taste in their fury to find the most "upper crust" accessory. But what is good taste?

Here are a few guidelines to follow when purchasing a handbag:

1. Flaunting your money with your purse is not good taste. If you can tell what brand it is from over a few feet away…consider yourself a 10 out of 10 on the tacky-o-meter. I don't mean that it's tacky for Tim Gunn to be able to tell you have a Balenciaga when he spots you in the Subway. But it is tacky to carry that bright pink purse with "Gucci" written on it a thousand times (especially if your T-shirt says Gucci, and you're wearing Gucci shades).

2. When paying top dollar, make sure that the purse is going to be your best friend…not your worst enemy. In other words, it is the nucleus of your everyday knick-knacks. It must be able to withstand your hectic life. The last thing you need is a bottomless pit of junk.

3. If a purse is heavy before you put anything into it…please consider a different candidate. Your chiropractor will thank you.

4. When making a sizable purchase, bring along someone whom you trust. They will help you when it comes down to the real pressing issues in this complicated world - "Will my life be better with the hobo or the shoulder bag? Brown suede or black leather? Do I vote for Obama?"

5. Every fashionista must invest in staples: a good summer straw bag, a versatile clutch, a heavy duty messenger bag, and an everyday purse that goes with practically everything.

6. Don't spend too much on trendy stuff. Just think: can I wear this in one year? Five years? Will this be another case of the teddy bear backpack? Or worse: the FANNY PACK?!

7. Salvatore, Coco and Bottega are your true friends…they will never flake out on you on a Friday night. They can withstand any hardship, breakup, or bad day to come. They also help smuggle Raisinettes into the movies.

8. Vera Bradley. NO NO NO. I see it and it is unsettling.

9. Never forget how to treat a purse. Especially the good ones. Take caution when throwing in pens, makeup, or the purse death angel: Purell.

10. Did you know that fake handbags are illegal to sell? There are reasons why. Besides being counterfeit and taking away from designers' sells, it also supports child labor and funds terrorist activity. Oh, and I love your Fucci and Goach.

These may only be guidelines, but I do believe they are just as important as the 10 commandments. Follow these rules and you should be in handbag heaven. You have the freedom to spend your money however you choose, don't spend it on a bad handbag. There is enough corruption in this world, please don't contribute through bad taste.
